Empatheyes is an advanced visual simulation tool which offers a powerful way to understand and empathise with various visual impairments. By layering different visual effects and adjusting different settings, it can show how human vision can be affected. Some of the visual functions/features which can be shown are:
Visual Acuity: This term refers to how well a person can see fine detail at a given distance. Empatheyes can show how different conditions affect sharpness and detail perception.
Contrast Sensitivity: This term describes how well a person can distinguish an object from its background. It is critical for recognising faces, reading, and night vision.
Photosensitivity: This refers to the eye's reaction to different light intensities. Some eye conditions cause heightened sensitivity to light, and Empatheyes can mimic this discomfort.
Visual Field: A person’s visual field describes how far they can see ‘out of the corners of their eyes’ when looking at a central point. Empatheyes can simulate various visual field defects.
Colour Vision: Colour perception is another key function of vision. Colour blindness and other related conditions can be shown using Empatheyes.
With the ability to control and combine these five facets of vision, Empatheyes can simulate over 30 unique eye conditions, creating a broad understanding of various visual impairments. These simulations can span a wide range of conditions, including, but not limited to:
Refractive Errors
Myopia(nearsightedness)
Hyperopia(farsightedness)
Presbyopia
Astigmatism
Glaucoma
Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
Wet (AMD)
Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP)
Diabetic Retinopathy
Cataracts
Colour blindness (Colour vision deficiency)
Photophobia(light sensitivity)
Retinal detachment
Hemianopia(Hemianopsia)
Stargardt's Disease
Retinoschisis
Diplopia(Double Vision)
Albinism
Achromatopsia
Cone-Rod Dystrophy
Leber's Congenital Amaurosis
Nystagmus

Coloboma
Congenital Cataract
Congenital Glaucoma
Optic Nerve Atrophy
Optic Nerve Hypoplasia
Retinopathy of Prematurity
Plus many more….
Please note that any visual simulation technology like Empatheyes cannot completely capture the experience of living with these conditions, as they may have additional systemic effects and complications beyond the visual symptoms. Always consult with a healthcare professional for accurate information and diagnosis.
Don’t see an impairment listed?
If you don't see a specific visual impairment listed, please don't hesitate to reach out. Our team contains a selection of fully qualified optometrists who can provide insights into various eye conditions. They guide us in understanding how we might simulate specific visual impairments that are not already included in our tool. We are committed to continual improvement and expansion of our simulation capabilities to encompass a wide range of vision conditions.
